FAQs

How many sessions should I expect if I am interested in getting neurofeedback or the LENS?

Typically, many LENS therapists recommend 15-20 sessions. However, we want to see changes within 1-6 sessions.

Do clients typically choose counseling only or combined LENS-counseling?

Some of my clients are in psychotherapy or counseling-only and others have chosen the combined LENS-counseling service. Sometimes, they decide they want to try the other service and they do.

Will my insurance company reimburse me for the LENS?

Often times, insurance companies do not reimburse even a portion of the costs of neurofeedback or the LENS. Please call your insurance company prior to scheduling an appointment to verify whether or not some of the fees paid up front will be reimbursed. The CPT codes are 90875 and 90876.

If your insurance policy covers some of the fees for CPT codes 90875 and 90876, your insurance company will require a diagnostic code which will become part of your permanent medical records.  It is entirely up to you whether or not you request some reimbursement from your insurance company. I will provide a superbill with the CPT and DSMV diagnostic codes after your request. You may use the superbill to request the reimbursement after the service and fees have been paid to me up front.

Will my insurance company reimburse me for counseling or psychotherapy-only services?

Many insurance companies will provide some partial (or full) reimbursement for psychotherapy-only CPT codes, after you have obtained a superbill from your therapist and requested the reimbursement. The codes to inquire about coverage are 90791 and 90834. In this case, your insurance company will require a diagnostic code which will become part of your permanent medical records.  It is entirely up to you whether or not you request some reimbursement from your insurance company. I will provide a superbill with the CPT and DSMV diagnostic codes after your request. You may use the superbill to request the reimbursement after the service and fees have been paid to me upfront.

Will you see my child for psychotherapy services only?

Unfortunately, I am unable to see children for psychotherapy only services at this time.  I am honored, however, to see children and often times their relatives for the LENS.

Can you say more about ISTDP?

ISTDP or Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy is a psychodynamic approach that uses principles from mindfulness, attachment and psychodynamic theories, and neuroscience. As we meet, my goal is to pay close attention to your physiology and anxiety levels so that we work as efficaciously as possible. There is a growing body of research on ISTDP and its helpfulness with medically unexplained symptoms, depression, anxiety, self-sabotaging behaviors, relationship difficulties, and much more.

Is it possible I will not notice any changes after getting LENS?

Yes.  Some clients do not respond to the LENS and for various reasons. We should know this fairly quickly. The Ochs Lab’s website states, “It is remarkably effective, and over 85% of people who have used the LENS have benefited significantly from it.”  Usually, no change is a result of either too little or too much LENS. Sometimes, the person receiving the LENS is the last to notice changes in him or herself. In any case, the LENS requires close and frequent communication between the client (or a relative or close companion) and the therapist. After 48 hours have passed, we will have a sense of whether or not the previous LENS session was effective.
